Mambo! Habari gani? Or: “Hey there! How are you doing?”. Those words, which we learned during our first two days, sounded loud and clear throughout the day. We travelled 24 hours which included a four-hour road trip. One large road, 100km/h, only a line preventing a collision between us and the travelers in the other direction. Luckily our really experienced driver Fausdi made sure that we all arrived in our house in piece at 7 o’clock in the morning.
We slept for a few hours and then it was time to meet some important people from the Mzumbe University, where our place is located. Mama Dean, Baba Mtali, Hassan, Mara and Nicolaus. All very nice people who gave us a warm welcome.
Thursday our contactlist grew even bigger when visiting National Resources, where everyone is enthusiastic about the BeeTogether-project. Later on in the evening we had our very first Tanzanian party with our local partners, celebrating our birthday-girl, Margo! Saba-saba (the 7th of the 7th) is a traditional holiday in Tanzania, making it the perfect opportunity to visit the Masai-market. Here, our (slightly hung-over) stomachs were filled with (very) fresh roasted goat meat. Pretty awesome experience!
So up until now, we’ve mostly been up to shaking hands with important people from our project and settling in for the coming 6 weeks. Coming week we’ll <be diving straight into the practical part of our plans and we will be visiting two groups. So stay tuned to witness our very first Tanzanian-bee experience and many more fun facts we’ll be posting about this week!
Kwaheri marafiki!
Oh and something else, we also just found out that our cooking fire gives electrical shocks so now we know what to do when someone misbehaves…
